Comment Ghosting

What does Comment Ghosting mean?

Taking away a user’s comments

When an online community manager or social media platform sneakily restricts a user’s comments, making them less visible, it’s known as comment ghosting. It’s a play on the word ghosting, a term used when someone suddenly disappears or withdraws without any explanation.

Generally, users who see their comments being sidelined or removed have likely violated the rules set by the social media channel or online forum. This could involve spreading false information or using offensive language against other users.

Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Reddit, and TikTok have been accused of resorting to comment ghosting. More often than not, these platforms focus on extreme left-wing and right-wing individuals who are known for spreading conspiracy theories or offensive content directed at others.

Comment ghosting goes by a few other names as well. You might hear it referred to as stealth banning, ghost banning, or shadowban.

Example for using ‘Comment Ghosting’ in a conversation

Hey, did you see my comment on that post?

No, I didn’t. What did you say?

I called out their false information, but I think I got comment ghosted.

Oh no, that’s frustrating! They must have hidden your comment.
