What does Costcop mean?

A worker at Costco who checks your receipt

A Costcop is a person who works at Costco and is stationed at the exit. Their job is to check that the items listed on your receipt are the same as the ones in your cart. It’s like they’re the cops of Costco, but they don’t really have anything in common with real cops.

It’s hard to say who came up with the term, but it was probably someone who was a bit peeved about having to wait in line just to get out of the store. Yes, it can be a bit of a hassle, but hey, there’s a silver lining to this cloud.

Every now and then, these Costcops will doodle a little smiley face on the back of your receipt. And let’s face it, that’s a pretty nice way to end your shopping trip. So, yes, the wait can be a little annoying, but that smiley face makes it all worthwhile.

I got stopped by a Costcop at the exit!

Oh no, did they think you stole something?
