Dur

What does Dur mean?

Something that is clearly obvious

When something is pretty clear or obvious, you might hear someone exclaim, “Dur!” It’s a slang term often used to point out things that should be common knowledge. For instance, your friend Jane might say, “the office gets quiet after 4 pm,” and you could respond with, “Dur, that’s because everyone’s logging off.”

This term is mostly used in text messages, online chats, and on social media platforms like Twitter and TikTok. But don’t be surprised if you hear it during everyday conversations too. It’s a quick way to highlight someone’s momentary lapse in judgement, or even your own.

Interestingly, dur is just another way of saying ‘duh’ or ‘derp’. These terms are all used in similar contexts. You might also hear someone say, “No dur!” as a sarcastic response to a statement that’s glaringly obvious.

Example for using ‘Dur’ in a conversation

Hey, did you hear about that new restaurant in town?

Dur, everyone’s been talking about it! It’s been all over social media.

I know, right? I’m planning to try it out this weekend.

Dur, make sure to make a reservation. It’s going to be packed!
