Something or service you get for no cost
A freebie is something you get without having to pay for it. These are often given away as part of a special promotion or deal.
A popular example of such a promotion is the “Buy one, get one” (BOGO) offer. Here, you purchase an item at its regular price and then receive another item of the same or lesser value as a freebie.
There are various other ways that freebies might be offered. You could get a free item just for stepping into a store, for signing up to an email list, for wearing something with a brand’s logo, or for spending a certain amount of money.
However, it’s always good to remember that there’s usually a catch with freebies. If someone offers you a freebie with no strings attached, it’s worth being a little cautious.
There are also people out there who try to live off of freebies. These folks are known as “Moochers.” Be careful of them. They might try to mooch freebies off you or they might aggressively take advantage of free stuff from places like hotels (think of the character Chandler Bing from Friends), churches, food banks, restaurants, and other places that offer hospitality services.
Example for using ‘Freebie’ in a conversation
Hey, have you heard about the new restaurant in town?
Yeah, I heard they’re giving away freebies to the first 50 customers!
No way! What kind of freebies?
I think they’re offering free appetizers or desserts with every meal.
