What does Marinated mean?

When we hear the word ‘marinated’, we usually think of food getting soaked in flavours. But in slang, ‘marinated’ has a different meaning. It’s used to describe a person who has had too much to drink and is, therefore, heavily intoxicated.

For instance, if your dad had a little too much fun at your brother’s wedding party, you could say, “Dad’s totally marinated on the dance floor.” Or, when a buddy is trying to get behind the wheel after several beers, you might say, “Let me drive you home, you’re way too marinated.”

The phrase ‘marinated’ is a playful way of saying someone is drunk. It borrows from the idea of a food item being drenched in liquid, in this case, the liquid being alcohol. This term has been around since at least the 1980s, but it isn’t clear who first started using it.

Example for using ‘Marinated’ in a conversation

Hey, are you coming to the party tonight?

Yeah, for sure! I’m gonna get marinated!

Haha, don’t go overboard, okay?

No worries, I’ll keep it under control.
