What does OTT mean?

Over the top

When you see something that’s a bit too much, you might say it’s “OTT”, or “over the top.” This term is a fantastic way to explain when someone’s reaction is way more intense than the situation calls for.

Imagine, for instance, your buddy John kicks a hole in the wall because his favorite team lost a game. You could tell him, “John, relax. You’re being totally OTT.” Or, if your girlfriend needs to vent about your Aunt Patty’s antics, she might text you, “You need to talk to your aunt, she’s going OTT tonight.”

But remember, OTT isn’t always a negative thing. You might say that you’re a fan of Quentin Tarantino films because they’re OTT with their action scenes. Or, you could describe a comedian as OTT funny because their jokes are wildly exaggerated.
