What does Prepper mean?

An individual who is ready for a disaster

A prepper is someone who takes steps in advance to get ready for possible disastrous events. These could range from a widespread power failure, a natural disaster, to more extreme situations like nuclear warfare or societal meltdown. These individuals, often called survivalists, gather necessary supplies, fortify their homes, and make other preparations to be self-reliant in case of a disaster.

The term prepper is often used in the phrase ‘doomsday prepper’. These are the preppers who are planning for major world-altering events that could bring about the end of the civilization as we know it. A typical doomsday prepper might have an underground shelter filled with enough food, water, and other essentials to last for several years, helping them survive through various high-level emergencies.

However, not all preppers are preparing for the end of the world. Many are just ordinary folks who want to be ready for more common emergencies. For instance, someone who has stocked up on a few weeks’ worth of canned food and bottled water, in case of a power cut or a water supply disruption, could also be considered a prepper.
