What does Sponcon mean?

Sponcon stands for Sponsored content

Sponcon is a term used to describe sponsored content shared on social media platforms by those with a large following, commonly known as influencers. These posts often take the form of product endorsements or reviews and can sometimes be hard to distinguish from an influencer’s regular posts.

Due to the difficulty in telling sponcon and regular posts apart, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and numerous social media sites have stipulated that influencers must clearly state when their content is sponsored. However, not all influencers adhere to this regulation, leading to some confusion among their followers.

Although the term sponcon is mainly associated with social media influencers, it has been in existence even before the advent of social media. For instance, magazines have been known to feature sponsored content disguised as regular articles. These are also considered a form of sponcon.
