What does Troll mean?

An individual who makes hurtful remarks online

When we talk about a ‘troll’, we’re referring to someone who intentionally posts upsetting or false comments online to stir up trouble. These folks are usually found on forums and in online chats, but they can pop up anywhere there’s an online gathering.

Trolls are known for spreading information that’s not accurate just to get a rise out of people or to trick them into believing something that’s not true. It’s their way of getting attention or causing chaos.

The best way to deal with a troll? Don’t feed them! That means, don’t give them the emotional reaction they’re fishing for. If a troll doesn’t get a rise out of you, they’ll usually lose interest and go looking for someone else to mess with.

Example for using ‘Troll’ in a conversation

Hey, have you seen the comments on your latest post?

Yeah, I saw them. They’re trying to wind me up, but I’m not falling for it.

Good for you! Sounds like you’ve got a troll on your hands.

Yeah, I figured as much. I’m not going to respond, though. That’s exactly what they want.
