What does VG stand for?

Video game

‘VG’ is short for ‘video game’, which refers to an electronic game that can be played on devices like computers, consoles, handheld gadgets, or arcade machines. Some of the well-known VGs are Street Fighter, Donkey Kong, Call of Duty, Red Dead Redemption II, Pac-man, and Terraria.

Even though the term ‘video game’ has been around since the early-1970s, it wasn’t until the 1990s and early-2000s that the abbreviation ‘VG’ came into popular use. This happened when gamers began to connect online and started using ‘VG’ when playing or discussing video games on internet forums. While it’s commonly used amongst gamers, non-gamers might also use it, but less frequently.

Since the growth of video games on platforms like Atari, Nintendo, SEGA, Sony, and Microsoft, gamers have developed numerous slang terms to describe things from player skills to different types of gameplay. Some of these frequently used terms are MMORPG, noob, SMP, GG, Stack, and mod.
