What does XOX mean?

Kiss, hug, kiss

XOX is a popular term used to express affection in the digital world. It’s used in text messages, emails, and also on traditional mediums like letters and greeting cards.

It’s a shorter version of the more common XOXO acronym. In this, the “X” stands for a “kiss” and the “O” symbolizes a “hug”. Its origin, however, is not very clear.

There are theories that the “X” can be traced back to the Middle Ages when people used the Christian cross symbol as a kiss of faith to Jesus on documents and letters. The “O” on the other hand, is believed to have been used by Jewish immigrants as a signature when they arrived in the U.S.

Eventually, the “X” and “O” were combined to communicate affection through symbols of hugs and kisses. You can use XOX whenever you want to convey affection towards someone, be it in an email or a birthday card.

The nature of this affection – friendly or romantic – usually depends on the relationship between the two people involved. Since it’s a widely understood term, most people will get what you mean when you use it. However, they might wonder why you didn’t use the longer and more recognized XOXO version.
