D&D

What does D&D stand for?

Dungeons and Dragons

D&D is an acronym for Dungeons & Dragons, a well-liked tabletop role-playing game (RPG) that lets players pretend to be characters in a fantastical environment. It came out first in 1974 and is still the top RPG on the market.

During a game of D&D, a group of players (typically three to five) get together and invent player characters (PCs). These characters serve as the players’ alter-egos in the game, embarking on adventures in a world made up by the Dungeon Master (DM). The players and the Dungeon Master then weave a narrative where the characters either conquer the challenges set by the Dungeon Master or get beaten by them.

The popularity of Dungeons & Dragons has seen several ups and downs. In the 1980s, it faced accusations of promoting devil worship and Satanism, a period known as the “Satanic Panic”. However, the reputation of the game bounced back from this setback.

In the late 2010s and early 2020s, D&D saw a surge in popularity due to its feature on the Netflix series Stranger Things and the growing trend of actual play podcasts and videos. This boost in its public image, along with the spread of online D&D tools like Roll20.net and DnDBeyond.com, makes D&D perhaps more popular now than ever before.
