Laning

What does Laning mean in MOBAs?

Keeping to one lane

In games like Heroes of Newerth (HoN) or Smite, Laning refers to the role given to you in a specific pathway or lane. When someone says, “you’re laning top”, it simply means you’ve been tasked to guard the upper pathway in the game map.

Your job when laning is to stop your towers from being destroyed, kill as many minions as possible, and stop enemy players from doing the same in your lane. Your main focus should be to protect your lane and rack up points.

Often, there comes a time in the game when you need to shift from defending your own lane to joining your team in a combined attack or defense. This period is often referred to as the “end of the laning phase“.

Example for using ‘Laning’ in a conversation

Hey, are you up for some League of Legends tonight?

Sure, count me in! I’m just finishing up a match.

Great! I’ll invite you once I’m ready. Which lane are you laning tonight?

I’ll be laning top. What about you?

I’m laning mid. Let’s coordinate our attacks later!
