Covid

What does Covid mean?

COVID-19

When talking about the year 2020, the term ‘covid’ is everywhere. It’s a shortened version of ‘COVID-19’, the name given to the novel coronavirus disease that emerged in 2019. We’ve all heard it called other things – SARS-CoV-2, Wuhan Pneumonia, or even ‘rona, but ‘covid’ is the phrase that’s really stuck. It’s become the common lingo between friends, family, colleagues, and the online community when discussing the virus.

Covid isn’t just a term, it’s a worldwide event that has reshaped our lives and our language. In the wake of the pandemic, our vocabularies have expanded with new phrases and slang related to lockdown, working from home (WFH), and social distancing.

Pre-covid, the average person wouldn’t have known what PPE stood for, and terms like FOBO, zoom towns, or the quaranfifteen didn’t even exist. Now, these are just a few of the covid-related slang that fill sites like ours. Hopefully, many of these terms will become irrelevant as we move past the pandemic.
