Play of the game
When an epic moment happens in a video game, it’s called a “POG”, or play of the game. Such a moment usually takes place at a key point in the game and can make a big difference in the result.
Some may remember POG as a popular game with cardboard discs in the 90s. But here, it’s a term rooted in the streaming platform Twitch, where it started being used in 2012 to show excitement. The term comes from “PogChamp“, first said by the streamer Gootecks during a promotional recording on October 26, 2011.
Over time, “POG” led to “poggers“, a term gamers use to express something that’s really cool. Twitch even added a poggers emote in 2017, showing a surprised-looking Pepe the Frog.
Before it became popular on Twitch, sports fans sometimes used “POG” to refer to the best part of a game. Now it’s most often seen in the chat section of a live game stream on Twitch (and on TikTok) where people use it to react to incredible in-game moments. But because it’s so common, some use “POG” sarcastically to talk about everyday stuff.
Example for using ‘POG’ in a conversation
