Vent

What does Vent mean?

Let out your annoyance

When you hear someone say they need to ‘vent’, they’re basically saying they need to let out some negative emotions. Much like venting lets air or some other substance out of a confined area, venting in a slang sense is about releasing pent-up frustration or anger. It’s about getting those negative feelings out of your system.

People often vent to those they are close with, like their best friend, significant other, or a trusted family member. They are looking for someone who will listen to their grievances and offer sympathy. Sometimes, however, a person might vent alone, or to anyone who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The term ‘vent’ can also have a completely different meaning if you’re talking about the popular video game, Among Us. In this context, to vent means to use the game’s ventilation system as a method of quick travel. This is a special ability that only the Imposters and Engineers in the game have.

Example for using ‘Vent’ in a conversation

Ugh, I had the worst day at work today. 😫

Oh no, what happened? 😟

My boss totally ignored my ideas during the meeting. It’s so frustrating! 😑

That sounds really annoying. You should vent about it to someone to let it out. 😀
