Based

What does Based mean?

Agree

When you come across the term ‘Based’ on social media or forums, it’s a way of saying “I agree” or “that’s cool”. This slang has been around for a while but got a new lease of life thanks to the rapper Lil B, also known as The BasedGod.

Originally, ‘Based’ was used to tag someone as weird or unusual. It came from the term basehead, which is a label for a person who freebases cocaine. But when people started using ‘Based’ to describe Lil B, he decided to redefine it.

Lil B’s interpretation of ‘Based’ was about being true to oneself. As he put it, it means not worrying about what others think and having the courage to do what you want.

This new meaning of ‘Based’ caught on fast in 4chan’s music forums, where it was used to applaud bold, experimental music. Later, it found a home in the site’s politics forums. Here, right-wing users used ‘Based’ to show agreement with brave and often contentious actions.

As ‘Based’ spread across the internet, it evolved into a way of agreeing with unconventional opinions. However, it’s also used with a hint of sarcasm sometimes, to ridicule outlandish views or actions.
